Our first night together was amazing!

I want to start out by giving a HUGE Thank You to our Promise Ladies!! You are all so amazing and I feel honored to have met and spent time with you last night. We had a great evening of information, sharing, and getting to know one another.

Jennifer Bradshaw, Executive Director with the Central Florida Affiliate of Susan G. Komen, hosted us in her beautiful office. Jennifer has been an instumental part of this project. She has gotten us the "art studio" space to utilize, the paint from Color Wheel, most of our awesome Promise Ladies, and many, many more contributions. Thank you, thank you, thank you Jennifer!

We had the talented Diedre Peeler, an art teacher from The Maitland Art Center present, to help us to begin with our creative ideas. Thank you Diedre.

Cosette Floyd, a fellow Rollins student, was present to document our first night together. She took some great photos of our ladies that will be up soon! She is going to be making a documentary of this journey...so cool! Thank You Cosette.

Ladies...let the creativity begin! If you all need anything, at anytime, please just ask. We are happy to help or provide any assistance we can...seriously :0)

Update!!

I had a great meeting with Jennifer this morning and we finalized all of the details for our first meeting with our Promise Ladies tomorrow. We are so excited to meet all of you and begin this journey together.

I got a call today from a fellow student at Rollins that is interested in collaborating with us. She is looking to film a documentary and would like it to be about our Promise Ladies! She too is looking to create a Big Bold Self Leadership Goal, and since her mother passed away from Cervical Cancer, she felt that this would be a great place to shoot her film. I of course agreed and think it will be a HUGE asset to this project! We will then be able to keep a video journal of our project...INCREDIBLE!

Thank You...Round 1!

This project has been a huge success already and we have only gotten started. The magnitude and miracles that have fallen into place, wouldn't have been possible without the initial blessings from God. I am so thankful to be a part of this and so humbled that God put this project on my heart. I can only hope that this is the first of many!

I would also like to thank Jennifer Bradshaw, Executive Director with Susan G. Komen of Central Florida. She has been such a tremendous help by providing support, resources, and encouragement. I am so blessed to also be starting an internship with her on March, 31st. Thank You Jennifer!

Kat Fieler - Thank you for all of your encouraging words and excitement about this project. Your enthusiasm is contagious and I appreciate your support even in the midst of difficulty. I am so excited about the opportunities to come!

Thank you to Lynda Collier for introducing me to Kat as well as your great advice and ideas!

And a special thank you in advance to all of the Promise Ladies. You are the reason, the purpose, and the meaning behind this whole event. I thank you for your determination to fight a hard fight, the willingness to step out and try something new, and the inspiration that you will provide to so many who will be involved in this project. You are true blessings!

This week is the start!

Well Friends, this week is the start of it all! We will be hosting our first meeting this Wednesday evening at 7:00pm in the Komen offices.  As of right now we have 7 Promise Ladies (artists) that will be participating in this project. Each women has an incredible story that I am so excited to learn more about and be able to share with all of you.

The chairs are in, they just need to be sanded, prepped, and transported from my house to the Komen office. If you would like to assist me with this piece of the project, please let me know (trosey17@yahoo.com). I could also use the help of a pick up truck to get the chairs to their destination.

If anyone is interested in coming on Wednesday nights to hangout, provide a snack, or even an artistic idea, I would love to have you!

Seeking cancer survivors
posted by SMaxwell on Mar 19, 2009 5:24:30 PM

* Also, the Central Florida chapter of the Susan G. Komen foundation is seeking breast-cancer survivors and patients to participate in an artistic fundraiser. The organization already has 5 patients/survivors -- and is looking for a total of 10 to paint chairs and participate in an artistic fundraiser. Participants will decorate chairs, auction them off and share their stories of information. For more information -- or to volunteer for the effort -- you can contact Jennifer Bradshaw with the local Komen affiliate at 321-972-5534 or execdirector@komencentralflorida.org. More info on the event in the letter below, written by a local college student, who inspired the event.

4 for the price of 1!

I received 4 more chairs today! I did have to pay for these, but the seller, Ms. Joan, gave me a great deal! She lives out in Winter Springs in a beautiful home. We connected on Craiglists as well. She was very helpful and I am extremely grateful for her contribution. Thanks Joan...the chairs are beautiful!

My Magical Afternoon off the Avenue

I just had the most incredible afternoon! I met two strangers today, Elle and Paul. They live here in Winter Park, and have a magical house, plus an art studio...so cool! I have been in touch with Elle via email regarding this project. She heard about through the Crealde Art School, where Paul teaches. She shared with me that Paul had a bronze statue that he created called "A Woman in Triumph." I had the priveldge of seeing it today and it is breathtaking! It is a beautiful, average sized woman, with her arms up in the air balancing on one foot. Her eyes gaze up to the heavens and her expression is joyful. Paul is interested in selling this statue in hopes that whomever owns it, will remember all of the women who are fighting breast cancer everday! Elle and Paul are two of the most inviting, friendly, and caring people I have come across. They have a passion for life and they are always looking to learn, grow, and help others to do the same. I thank you both for such an incredible afternoon!

Who are you calling a "Smock?"

I hold three men's dress shirts in my hand thanks to my friend Josh. He made a special trip to my house just to bring me the shirts for us ladies to use as smocks! (Well...he actually was coming over anyway, but still, super nice :0) Thanks Josh!

"My Favorite Color Is Pink!"

I picked up our 2nd & 3rd donated chairs today!!

Craigslist has once again been the connector of two strangers. I sent an email to a very nice girl named Laura. She promptly wrote back stating, "I have absolutely no problem donating this chair for a good cause, my father has Parkinson's disease, so I know how important it is to have events for these causes." It was so incredible that once again a simple email asking a question, allowed someone an opportunity to help. Laura shared with me the story of her flamingo chair. Her and her mom used to go to garage sales and thrift stores looking for funky/retro chairs. They would then refinish and repaint the chairs; somewhat as a hobby. I asked her how the flaming chair came to be and she said, "Well, my favorite color is pink! I also love flamingo's, because they are pink and so I painted the chair pink." I told her how awesome it was to find someone willing to donate a chair, especially a pink one :0) Laura will be moving to New York...two chairs lighter!

Thank you Laura for donating your super cool flamingo chair as well as your retro black chair that has SO much potential!

We Got Our First Donated Chair Today!!

I had such an awesome experience today!
I decided last night that I would begin searching on Craigslist to see if people were selling wooden chairs. Once I found a chair that I liked, I emailed the contact person and asked them if they would be willing to donate it for a good cause. I could not believe the amount of responses! People were so excited to be able to help.
I had the priveledge of meeting Ileana, her husband, and their beautiful daughter Isabella. She told me the story about her chair. Her mother had given it to her before Isabella was born. She said, "you will really use this once Isabella is here." And that she did. Now that Isabella is 3-years-old, she no longer has a use for the chair nor the space. When I asked her if she would be willing to donate the chair, she said, "I am always interested in a great cause. I would be happy to donate the chair."
We arranged a meeting time for me to go pick up the chair. I was greeted outside by Ileana who proceeded to share with me how she was potty training Isabella...so cute!! I walked into their very nice home and as I entered the living room, I saw it. There was the absolutley gorgeous, solid white wooden rocking chair. It is in perfect condition except for a few little scratches...which will be sanded and painted anyway :0)
I am so grateful that Ileana has such a giving heart. One of our Promise Ladies will be truly blessed with this chair! Thank you Ileana and thank you God for continuing to provide!

The Purpose of The Promise...

My name is Theresa Ferreri and I am currently a Senior at Rollins College. I have partnered with Susan G. Komen for the Cure, to create an art project to support women who are battling breast cancer. It is called "The Promise Chair Affair."

We will be hosting a group of 6-10 women, who are battling breast cancer, once a week for 5 consecutive weeks: April 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29 from 6:00p.m.-9:00p.m. We will be meeting in the Susan G. Komen offices located at: 1350 Orange Ave, Suite 260 Winter Park, FL 32789.

Through in-kind donations, we are hopeful to have plain wooden chairs, paints, brushes and supplies, for these women to create a themed chair of their choice. Each week they will add a little bit more to their chair in hopes that after 5 weeks they will have created a masterpiece all their own. I currently have two local artists that are willing to donate their time and talents to provide creative ideas, artistic assistance, and implementation .

After the chairs are completed, we will host a voice auction event in which we will spotlight each woman, give her an opportunity to share her story and describe her work of art! Each piece will then be auctioned off and all of the proceeds will go directly to the the Central Florida Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The event is planned for Wednesday May, 20th. It will be a classy evening of wine, hors d'oeuvres, music, silent auction, and of course the main event will be the voice auction involving our "artists."

This is a great opportunity to meet some incredible women with incredible stories! This project allows these women one night a week to not think about cancer, to focus their attention, energy, and strength on something beautiful, and in the end have created something from nothing!

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Please let me know if you have any questions or need any further explanation. If you are interested in being a part of this project, please contact me via email: trosey17@yahoo.com.

With hope and determination,

Theresa Ferreri
